Stuck in the Nets

The strange whispers at night have persisted throughout the month of August, only growing stronger with time. Whatever is out there, it's searching for something. Or perhaps someone?

But that is a secondary worry today. The biggest problem on hand is that something large appears to have gotten caught in one of the sea nets. It's hard to tell what it is at a distance, but it's trashing about and getting tangled up in the lines. Something needs to be done about this before the creature destroys too much of the netting.

But also, Otherworlders should move cautiously. As they go to investigate, they'll find that the air is still and lacks the ambient sounds usually found in nature. There are no bird calls, no buzzing insects, nothing. Just the sounds of splashing.

This is a different... world... it's got... different rules... no one had powers... on my world. The best thing... would be to learn... how things work here.

We need to be able to protect ourselves if one gets through the nets somehow.

Something... long-distance... is best. You don't want to... get close... to something infectious. I have my arrows... I know some... of you have powers... do we have anything...else?

I have my sword. [Cyan says, putting a hand on the silver blade at his side.]

I don't know if it works on trolls, but it's what we use to kill larvae in my country, and they're a lot like trolls.

We're gonna have to try with whatever we have. And it might not be as much as we've got at home, or as strong, but I think we can manage.

[Trolls, Larvae... The name for his kind of creature keeps getting worse and worse.]

They're monsters made from dead humans, they come out at night and eat human souls.

[ghoulserrand]

That's... horrifying...

It is, but that's why we have people trained to fight them! [He's cheerful about it.]

And they must have ways of fighting trolls here, has anybody asked them about it?

I know they only send immune people out, but other than that...

I read that they are vulnerable to fire, and averse to sunlight, moonlight, and the cold. So fire is often used against them. It didn't go into many practical details on fighting them, though.

They might not be... easy to fight... They're already... dead... You'd have to... aim specifically... to get them to stop... And you can't be... close enough... that it would infect you... Perhaps... incapacitating... and burning the rest.

Didn't sound like... they work in hoards... at least... from what you read.

My sword is a holy silver weapon, it's been blessed with healing light magic, and it's what we use to kill larvae back home.

I'd have to get pretty close to one to kill it, but I think I should try.

Of course! [He says, and draws it from its scabbard for Teo to get a better look. It's a big, strongly made sword, in keeping with his general "medieval Europe" aesthetic, but seemingly made of pure silver.]

[He gives Teo a sharp look but says nothing for obvious reasons, don't ask to see the sword specifically for killing undead?? But there it is.]

...That seems like it should be effective, in theory. It's hard to say when we're in a different world.

[Sorry Faust, can't hear you over Cool Sword. He doesn't step closer, but he leans forward, peering at the shiny thing.]

[He reaches back behind himself and draws an arrow.]

I use... these... nothing pure... or special... hardly even... waste them on the dead... they're just... easier for hunting... food with...

[He puts the arrow back.]

Should be... better than nothing... even if the... silver thing... doesn't apply here.

I can probably help with anything like that too. Normally I just fight demons but I bet this'll take care of trolls too.

[He holds up his sword! It's a katana. He just carries it around in its sheath rather than tying it onto his belt or something.]

For long range I have my fire too. Though I can't do that nearly as much as I used to, which sucks because fire is kinda my thing.

The fire... will be useful... it will help... get rid of the bodies...

... do you burn bodies in your country?

[He starts to shake his head, stops, then lifts a hand in a wobbly gesture.]

The undead... only came about... in recent times... in my world... Not the same... as yours... not the same... as this place either... You don't have... to burn them... but it can be... hard to make sure... the dead are... really dead... If you can't run... sometimes... fire is... the best way for people... Especially here... Kills the infection... That's why... the town was... half-burned...

It didn't happen... too much back home... but that's because... everyone's mostly dead.
