June 2021 - Sheep Island

So Fluffy!

The first month on the island has been a lesson in patience and hard work. While everyone can survive on the island, it takes much more to thrive, and there are plenty of projects that will help make life on the island seem just a little bit fuller.

Through the efforts of several individuals, the first of those projects has been complete. And on the first day of June, a herd of 50 sheep in both white and brown varieties arrives at the settlement. They are quickly ferried off to Sheep Island, where the repaired fences and passable barn make for a good home. These sheep will prove to be important to life on these islands, Milk, wool, and mutton are now all available for use on the island, though take care to ration your use of each! These 50 sheep are all you will get for now, and if you want more you will need to breed them.

Along with the sheep come a pair of Finnish Laphunds, Jorkki (male, the black dog) and Taimi (female, the brown dog). They're trained up and ready for sheep herding.

The Skald

The sheep aren't the only new arrivals to the islands on this day though. A man in his 50s, with red hair that is starting to go grey, also disembarks with a bag of personal effects.

Once everyone is settled and the sheep are taken care of, he will give a gruff greeting: "Mauri Möttönen, Skald. I'll be here for the next month, surveying the area for hidden Troll nests and making calls for the Cleansers to come as needed. They said all of you were doing alright on your own, but if you have any questions feel free to ask. You're not the first Otherworlder settlement I've been to, so this is familiar territory for me."

After that, he will take his things to the Main Hall and set up a sleeping area for himself, one a bit of a distance away from everyone else. It seems that he was right about being familiar with the area.

Oh, I don't know anything about spinning wool or making clothes.
maidofmistakes: Apologizing. (So I literally just wrote "sorry")

Me neither. But I guess we're going to have to learn... it can't be as bad as all the other stuff we've already had to learn, right?

I'm sure there's someone here who knows how to do it! And they can teach other people!
maidofmistakes: I'm running out of ways to say "unsure." (I wish we had vans that drove around)

I hope so, anyway. At least some of us are used to the technology here. I mean, no running water and stuff.

... what do you mean, no running water? [They are on an island there's running water everywhere.]
maidofmistakes: Hugging herself sadly. (We are all done wearing pants today)

[personal profile] maidofmistakes 2021-06-06 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
Like, we have to wash stuff in the lake or use buckets.

[personal profile] argentlarvae 2021-06-08 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
... where else would you wash things?
maidofmistakes: Sulking. (i think im in europe. pls send help)

Oh, right... your dimension's the same as this place. Okay, some places have water systems made by people to flow wherever you want them, then you drain the water out when you're done and it goes to be cleaned. It gets kind of complex, so I guess they couldn't keep it up here once the whole troll thing happened, same as most of the electricity.

It sounds convenient, but it must be really hard here for all of you who were used to that kind of thing before.
maidofmistakes: Sadly offering something. (My neck kind of hurts.)

[personal profile] maidofmistakes 2021-06-08 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, really... I thought I'd be better at adjusting by now.

[personal profile] argentlarvae 2021-06-17 11:17 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sure you'll do fine! It's a lot to adjust to, it's not a surprise if you're struggling!
maidofmistakes: Suspicious, not sure. (I can do like 15 pushups.)

[personal profile] maidofmistakes 2021-06-17 06:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess. What about you? Adjusting, I mean.

[personal profile] argentlarvae 2021-06-19 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
I think so. There isn't as much for me to get used to.
maidofmistakes: Recovering. (The bruises are from paintball.)

[personal profile] maidofmistakes 2021-06-19 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
That's good. We just have to figure out how we're all going to live day to day. So, uh, please don't get mad if I screw up.
argentlarvae: (47)

[personal profile] argentlarvae 2021-06-19 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I wouldn't get mad at you! It's not your fault!
maidofmistakes: Scared. (And then you told your sister how)

[personal profile] maidofmistakes 2021-06-19 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
You sure? Thanks... I'll try anyway. I mean, it's not the first new place I've had to get used to, I guess.
argentlarvae: (73)

[personal profile] argentlarvae 2021-06-20 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
Really? Where did you live?
maidofmistakes: In a field with Alura. (I went through my entire iTunes library)

[She breathes in and holds the crystal on her necklace.]

My home's... gone now. My parents evacuated me to Earth without them. I've been living there ever since, until now.

I'm sorry. That must have been incredibly difficult for you.

But I'm sure they'd be proud of you, you're doing your best even here.
maidofmistakes: Offering help. (I said "one day")

[personal profile] maidofmistakes 2021-06-21 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
I hope so. I'm just gonna have to keep on going. At least we can help these people out once we figure out what we're doing.

I hope we can!
