Nightly Visitor

It hasn't been that long since your arrival to this island, and everything is still new. Each day brings new surprises and more questions than answers, and there seems to be no easy way to find out anything about this world. What little outside contact you get from the radio or your Friday visitors certainly isn't helpful in any meaningful way.

Unfortunately, the questions will only continue to pile up. Because eventually, after a week or so of being on the island, anyone who stays out late will start to hear strange sounds outside. They're almost animalistic, in a way, but they will not resemble the cries of any animal that you might be familiar with. This is Something Else.

They're not close to the Town Hall though, and the sounds seem to be coming from the North, but that is about all you can get without further investigation. And investigation may be necessary, as the noises will return night after night, starting right at sunset and tapering off as the sun starts to rise. Whatever is out there, it's nocturnal. And it sounds desperate.

What will you do? Will you talk to others and make a plan? Will you try to search for the source of the strange noises? Will you look at day, or during the night? Or will you use the radio to call for advice?

You can also use this space to play out any prompt from the test drive meme, or anything else you may want to do.

Everyone can do a search and get some plot information once per character. This can be done either solo or in pairs, so there can be some overlap to make sure everyone gets a shot at getting plot information. If A and B form a search party at night, then that will count as both A and B's searching. A could then help C make a radio call and get some information that way, but B and C could not then subsequently do another search (as B and C would have been involved in a search somehow already).

This post will be open to investigating until May 24th, 2021. At that point, no further mod responses will be given. Even characters who app in after game start can come in and investigate, so long as it is before May 24th.

Are there fishing rods included among the general tools & supplies they're provided for rebuilding (or old ones among the town remains), or would they have to fashion their own using the tools provided?

Nightly Visitor

[ He's not happy to be quarantined on an island after arriving in some other place. But at the same time, it's not like anybody here did him wrong. And he's away from the twins. It levels out to just barely better.

"Survive." That's never been an issue for him.

They're getting supplies, but the lack of answers they're getting is starting to wear on his nerves. Add that to the nightly noises and he's not about to let this go by without checking on it directly.

He'll grab somebody at Town Hall near nightfall.]

[ Kano nearly jumps out of his skin when somebody approaches him after dark, and the retort to "go to sleep!" is on the tip of his tongue if he knew it'd just get thrown back at his face. He huffs a little, leans back, and places that smile back on his face. ]

Sure have! Whatcha think? Something nocturnal, hunts in packs... Better get the jump on them when we've got sunlight to burn.

[He's only on this island as part of generally exploring what their new surroundings have to offer, so he's less than thrilled to be approached by Bradley. Not that he's super into being approached by anyone, but still-]

[Rin is. Struggling. With his canoe. He's still learning how to paddle them around without going in circles, and while he can just pick it up to put it on the beach, his legs are now drenched from the knees-down. And he might be just a little annoyed as he's dropping the canoe on the ground. Hopefully it isn't damaged by that fall.]

Not really, I just got here. You thinking of fixing this place up too?

[Because the promise of meat is Very Nice and Rin is all for that. Even if it means fixing up a barn and some pasture fencing.]

A - Town Hall

[Let it be said that Yuri has always found ways to keep himself busy. Yes, even when dropped into a world he is completely unfamiliar with - even if it's as simple as keeping their main residence up to snuff. Yuri can be found keeping the Town Hall clean throughout the day, making sure things are where they belong and nothing's broken or worn out. If they're to sleep here for the time being, then it shouldn't be a mess, right? That's for everyone's benefit. He'll be back and forth from here to wherever else he might be, so consider this a catchall of sorts if you want to find Yuri someplace.]

B - Houses

[There's a whistle that comes from Yuri as he peeks into House #6.] Ah, geez. When they said nobody's lived here for twenty years, they meant it, huh?

[The tiny house is probably enough for him to manage to clean on his own, but fixing it up is going to be a challenge. Still, if it's so small, no one's going to notice if the carpentry isn't perfect, right?

Eh, that's a thought for later. Right now, Yuri is focused on moving everything that is inside this house to its front yard to assess what's there, decide what can be kept or repurposed or needs to be thrown out, and give the base rooms a good thorough clean. Repairs can come after he knows that, and if this works out? Hell, maybe he could help with those other houses down the line. Care to join him?]

C - Towards the North

...Okay. Nope, I don't know if I can handle another night of weird sounds. I'm going to check out what's in the area.

[Yuri says this to you with, notably, a sword holstered at his side and a...really creepy glove strapped onto one of his hands.]

What say you, friend? Feel like doing a little exploring?

[Do note that Yuri is going to check out the northern area in the afternoon, and he will be looking for traces of tracks or signs that a being has been through the area, whether they be animal or human or whatever else. He'll make sure anyone coming with him is back at the Town Hall before nightfall, but depending on what he finds, he might be inclined to go back after dark.]

[Faust notably hasn't been staying in the town hall at night, and today he has a similar line of thought to go take a look through some of the houses that are still standing. He was on his way toward the ones furthest from the middle of town when he spots Yuri emptying that smaller one. It's not that he intends to offer to help or anything, but...]

You're hard at work. Do you think we'll be here long enough to warrant making these homes livable?

[He looks at that glove, and then back at Yuri. Totally normal thing to be wearing, sure.]

Yeah, sure. You think it's on the island with us?

[He's really hoping it's not on the island with them.]

[ wtf does a glove like that even do, Kano can't imagine. There's no keeping the hand warm, it sort of reminds him of brass knuckles except instead of punching you have to backhand somebody to do proper damage.

Either day, afternoon is better than daytime, in Kano's opinion of the monsters maybe being nocturnal if they're noisier at night. Besides, he likes being able to see, too.

He doesn't seem to have anything with him, nothing in his hands and whatever's in his pockets stay there. Really, he doesn't seem like the sort of person you'd want to bring along with you, but for "a little exploring"? ]

Ehh... Sure, alright, yeah! Whatcha thinking, something the cats can help with?

Housing
[The beat-up, burnt-out husks of buildings weren't much to look at, and they were undoubtedly no better on closer experience - but they had some important things in their favor. First, roofs. Keeping the rain off was a really good start at a habitable shelter. They would, in short, work until something better could be devised.

Soma finds himself looking at one particularly decrepit example of the breed, a ramshackle stack of wood and nails that, he was certain, it would be ambitious to even call a hovel. It had only two things in its favor, really - a roof that was mostly leak-free, and solid timbers holding it up. The rest could be worked on, but without that framework, the rest was just so much inconveniently stacked material.]

...right. The floor's more dirt than plank and the walls have more holes than Swiss cheese... but it'll do for a start. I hope nobody else has already laid a claim...

Scavenging
[Truth be told, there wasn't a whole lot of material to be found just lying around. There were the dubious houses, what little furniture they contained... and that was about it. Even what lumber was there really wasn't worth recovering, except as a start on something better. Problem was, there really just wasn't a lumber yard around he could go and pick up, say, a few dozen ceiling joists or a load of two-by-fours from. There was no electricity - something he would be working towards fixing - and no running water, either. His best find so far, really, was an old barrel that could still hold water.]

We're going to have to harvest some trees somehow from the mainland at some point. There just isn't enough here to do much with beyond the very basics.

Northward
[Soma was, to be fair, uniquely sorted to the role of scout. His abilities gave him options that the others just didn't have - including actually walking out on the lake to have a look. He hasn't quite reached that point yet, though. For now, he's gathering what supplies he can find - not much - and the rudimentary tools he's managed to scavenge or hack together. And, just maybe, a companion. Someone who could keep an eye on his back while he was out there looking around. Hopefully someone who could spot things he might miss.]

Housing

[The presence of roofs is definitely a bonus, as is the fact that at least some of the buildings don't have any real structural damage. Cosmetic damage can be dealt with.

That does mean there's more personal effects around, which still unnerves Rin quite a bit, but they do need adequate housing. Staying in sleeping bags in a big group just isn't cutting it.]

I don't think anyone's claimed anything yet, besides that one guy who sleeps in the radio tower.

[Rin is ready to help though! Especially since Soma got stuck last time.]

Northward

[How far out is he going, exactly? Is he stopping at the first set of sea nets? or is he going beyond them?]

Gone fishin'

[The fishing supplies they have on hand are basic, but that's good enough for Faust. There are easier ways to catch and trap fish if he had access to a stream, not to mention with magic. But really, he's doing this to pass the time more than out of need for food. He's settled in by the lake with a basket beside him for keeping his catches in, enjoying the peace and quiet... aside from waving away or slapping at the occasional mosquito. Ugh.]


[You can also use this prompt for running into him anywhere else around the islands, as he'll be making his way around exploring the place.]

Windmill (night)

[While Faust spends his days either around the town hall or wandering the islands, on the first night he took a sleeping bag to the local windmill-slash-radio tower and proceeded to establish that as where he goes to sleep. He doesn't really know much about the radio since what is electricity even, but he's only there because the door locks. It's not ideal, but at least this way he can keep his dream problem under wraps.]

[That said, if you happen to pass by (or try to enter) the locked windmill late at night, you may notice a faint light from the gaps around the door. Maybe it's just candlelight, but the occasional softly glowing particles that waft through the cracks, shifting dreamlike shapes that fade away like embers- well, that's clearly not just from a candle.]

Nightly Visitor

[Those aren't normal cries. But the island isn't that big- if it were something malicious, it could have easily attacked by now. Still... he should find out what the source is.]

[He heads north shortly before sunset, with no intention of asking anyone else to come along. The sounds seem to start around dark, so all he has to do now is wait. In the meantime he slowly wanders the graveyard, reading the graves and silently paying his respects.]

[He'll hear sounds, all right, but at first it just seems to be footsteps followed by a "whoa!" as a teenage girl stumbles over a root.]

Oh! Uh... sorry. ...you came to see too, huh?

Windmill (night)

[Rin is honestly coming up to the windmill because he's considering using the radio to ask the military if the noises in the forest are normal or not, but he stops when he sees the light coming from the gaps around the door.]

Is someone still awake?

[First he's going to try just pulling the door open, but when that fails he's going to knock on the door. Open up, Faust. You have some fancy magic light to explain.]

[As everyone's getting used to the new town, it seems a good idea to put in some work helping out on the island. Supergirl happily volunteered to go for a supply run in the forest; after all, with all those buildings that need fixing, they'll need lumber, right?

Except if you're in there, you might hear an echoing thump and series of snaps, leading you to a series of trees that seem to have domino-crashed onto each other, and a girl scratching her head and laughing nervously.]

Sorry...

[They may not have sheep yet, but they do have crops, and Supergirl seems happy to help. Which is why you'll probably notice clouds of dust rising up into the air as she runs around the field with a wheelbarrow, clearing it of rocks before they finish up seeding... only to start to slow down and then collapse, knocking the wheelbarrow over on its side.]

Nn... What's going on?

[As it gets later in the night, you can find her hanging around the burned buildings, listening for the mystery creature. Still, she seems preoccupied, looking at the ruins of civilization.]

[he'd already agreed to get wood to help with building up the fences on sheep island, and that means surveying the wood they have available. Some of which is now on the ground.

And now Rin is looking at Supergirl instead of the trees, because what.]

What're you apologizing for? Did you shove them over or something?

[well, whether it's good survival advice or not, Akira can be found near the edge of the forest on Rabbit island, crouched down with one hand extended towards the underbrush. it looks like he's holding. . . a long leaf?? and is waggling it through the air, as though attempting to coax something out of hiding. a fluffy, pitch-black adult cat is perched on his back, peering over his shoulder as its tail flicks to and fro behind it. it is clearly not one of the feral cats on the island]

Hey, buddy. . . come on out. I'm not going to hurt you; promise.

[though the fact that Akira's coaxing is met with a hissing noise does not bode well]

[it's been a few days, and Akira. . . well. he can't say he's acclimated, but. he's making do. . . for now. which means when the sun begins to set and the area begins to grow dark, he is hastily making his way towards the town hall, hands in his pockets and shoulders slumped. the pitch black cat that has been following him around the past few days darts about at his heels, following at a swift pace]

[It's risky, but they don't have a lot of supplies, and even if this village has been abandoned for a while it still might have something worth looking for. He has a heavy staff in one hand and he taps on the side of a half-collapsed house before he looks inside.]

Hello! Is there anyone in there?

[Everything's falling into place pretty smoothly with the people they have (no one Cyan recognizes, but more importantly no one who recognizes him) and so Cyan has a few moments to.... try and lure a cat over. He's on his belly on the ground, wiggling a little branch with a leaf still attached on it in front of a suspicious-looking half-grown tabby. He's very focused. It's not very successful.]

[Cyan can be found around during the day. He's helpful, friendly, and knows what to do with very few resources. He does tend to be a little jumpy around technology (is electric lighting magic????? he's pretty sure it is), but he mostly catches on quickly.

He doesn't seem to be around at night, that's kind of weird.]

[Cyan just happened to pick the one ruined house that is... well, not occupied obviously, but Faust happened to already be looking around in this one. At the tapping he stiffens and looks up from the collapsed bookcase and mostly burned and water damaged ruined books he's kneeling beside, and rises to his feet when he sees a face.]

...There is, but I'll leave if you wanted to look around.

[There's still plenty of other places he can look through. Hopefully without getting disturbed, it's not like there's that many other people here...]

MEETING TIME!

[Cooking over an open fire isn't the easiest, especially when you only have raw ingredients to work with. But somehow, Rin does manage to whip up a decent dinner! It's fish, steamed vegetables, and boiled potatoes, but hey you work with what you have. Rin really is missing rice right about now though.

But when the food is done and everyone who's interested in eating comes over to the outside seating area of the Town Hall to eat, that's when Rin will speak up.]

You know, we've all been living here nearly a month already and we barely know each other. How about we do some kinda 'get to know you' talk?

[He pauses, and then a bit more sheepishly, he adds.]

If you guys wanna, I mean. Or we could talk about the weird noises outside at night too.
